FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Whether you're new to sports chiropractic or just want to know what to expect, here are answers to the questions we hear most. If you don't see your question, send us a note — we're happy to help.

Getting Started

Q: What is a Movement Assessment?

A: The Movement Assessment is the starting point for chiropractic care at our Spokane clinic. It's a comprehensive 30-minute evaluation where we look at how your whole body moves — not just where it hurts — to find the root cause of your pain or performance limitation.

We assess your mobility, stability, strength, and mechanics, then explain what we found and build a personalized care plan together. You'll leave your first visit knowing what's going on and what to do about it, with initial treatment when appropriate. No referral is needed.

Q: What conditions do you treat?

A: We specialize in helping golfers, runners, athletes, and active individuals recover from movement-related injuries — sprains, strains, and the kind of pain that builds up over time from training, sport, or daily life.

Common conditions we treat include:

- Golf-related injuries: low back, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and knee pain

- Running-related injuries: hip pain, IT band syndrome, runner's knee, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis

- Sports-related injuries: neck pain, weight-lifter's shoulder, tennis elbowsciaticaSI joint pain, and cervicogenic headaches.

We also work with patients dealing with persistent stiffness, recurring injuries, headaches, post-surgical recovery, or performance plateaus they can't pinpoint. If you're not sure whether we can help, schedule a Movement Assessment — that's exactly what it's designed for.

Q: I'm nervous about chiropractic care. What should I expect?

A: At The Movement Clinic, every visit begins with a comprehensive movement assessment and a discussion of your goals before any care is provided. Based on your needs and comfort level, treatment may include:

- Chiropractic adjustments, including low-force techniques using an activator

- Soft-tissue therapies such as pin and stretch, Graston, and cupping (myofascial decompression)

- Therapeutic exercise and movement-based rehabilitation

- Coordinated care with our massage therapists when appropriate

Your chiropractor will always explain the treatment plan before care begins. If you're uncomfortable with any aspect of chiropractic treatment, we welcome that feedback and will tailor care to meet you where you are.

Q: What should I wear to my appointment?

A: Comfortable athletic clothing works best — something you can move and stretch in. Since we'll be assessing how your body actually moves, loose workout gear or athletic shorts and a t-shirt are ideal. Avoid dress clothing when possible. If you're coming straight from work, no need to stress — there is a bathroom down the hall available for you to change.

Q: Do you work with teens and youth athletes?

A: Yes. We regularly work with teens involved in school sports, club sports, and competitive training — runners, golfers, basketball and soccer players, lifters, and racquet-sport athletes. Sports-related injuries don't wait for adulthood, and our movement-first approach works as well for younger athletes as it does for adults. Parents are welcome to be present for the assessment and any treatment sessions.

Q: Are you accepting new sports chiropractic and massage patients in Spokane?

A: Yes, we are currently accepting new chiropractic and massage patients at our Spokane location. New patients can easily schedule online by selecting the service that best fits their needs.

Treatment Approach

Q: What's the difference between sports chiropractic and regular chiropractic?

A: A traditional chiropractor typically focuses on spinal adjustments to address pain. Our sports chiropractors add several layers on top of that: a full movement assessment, sport-specific biomechanical testing, soft-tissue work, and therapeutic exercise.

The goal isn't just to relieve pain — it's to figure out why the pain happened, address the underlying movement pattern, and build the mobility, strength and coordination you need to stay in your sport. We use adjustments as one tool in a broader toolkit, not as the only tool.

Q: How is this different from seeing a regular chiropractor or physical therapist?

A: We sit somewhere between traditional chiropractic and physical therapy — and we borrow what works from each.

A traditional chiropractor typically focuses on spinal adjustments to address pain. A physical therapist typically focuses on rehab exercises and movement re-education, with limited use of hands-on manual therapy. At The Movement Clinic, every care plan includes all of it: chiropractic adjustments, soft-tissue work, and therapeutic exercise, layered on top of a full Movement Assessment and sport-specific biomechanical testing.

The other key difference is who we work with. We specialize in golfers, runners, athletes, and active individuals — so we understand swing mechanics, running gait, lifting patterns, and the demands of training and competition. That specialty perspective shapes how we assess you and how we build your return-to-play plan.

If you've tried either approach alone and felt like something was missing, this combined approach is often what closes the gap.

Q: How is your sports massage different from a spa massage?

A: Spa massage is built around relaxation. Sports massage is built around movement, recovery, and performance.

Our massage therapists assess where you're tight and why — then use techniques like deep tissue work, assisted stretching, cupping, and Graston to address restrictions that are limiting your training or contributing to pain. The work is more targeted, more focused, and more clinical. You may still find it relaxing, but the goal is to get you back to doing what you love — not just to leave the table feeling good.

Q: What is the Going Beyond Par program?

A: Going Beyond Par is our recovery program for golfers. It combines our standard sports chiropractic approach — Movement Assessment, adjustments, soft-tissue work, and rehab — with golf-specific testing of your swing mechanics, mobility, strength, and power.

The goal is to identify why golf is causing you pain and what to do about it, then build a return-to-play plan that keeps you on the course.

Q: What is the Rock Your Run program?

A: Rock Your Run is our recovery program for runners. Like Going Beyond Par, it combines our standard sports chiropractic approach with running-specific assessment — breathing, power control, gait mechanics, and load tolerance.

We use it to figure out why running is irritating your body and to build a plan that keeps you running rather than rehabbing.

Q: I'm nervous about getting my neck adjusted — is that a required part of my treatment?

A: You're not alone in feeling that way — it's one of the most common concerns we hear, and the short answer is no, it isn't required. Neck adjustments (spinal manipulation) are a common part of our care plans because they help restore joint mobility, but we routinely adapt the plan around patient preferences and medical considerations. We can often get similar results with assisted stretching, soft-tissue work, and targeted exercise. Bring it up at your initial movement assessment and we'll build a plan together that you feel good about.

Q: I notice your chiropractors do therapeutic exercises with their adjustments. Can I just be adjusted?

A:  At The Movement Clinic, we always combine adjustments with movement-based therapies — soft-tissue work, assisted stretching, and therapeutic exercise — because that combination is what produces lasting results. Adjustments alone tend to relieve pain temporarily without addressing why the pain happened in the first place.

Our mission is to reduce your pain and maximize your performance, and we've found through experience that the combined approach is what gets patients there. If you have a strong preference for adjustment-only visits, a traditional chiropractor may be a better fit.

Q: Can I see a chiropractor and a massage therapist on the same day?

A:  Yes — and many patients do. Coordinating both providers in the same visit is especially useful when chiropractic adjustments and soft-tissue work are addressing the same issue. When you book online, you can stack appointments back-to-back. Our front desk can also help coordinate timing if you give us a call.

Q: Will I need ongoing chiropractic care forever?

A: No — and that's not how we structure care plans. Most patients move through three phases:

- A Recovery phase where we address the pain and the underlying movement issue

- A Stabilization phase where we lock in the gains with rehab and periodic reassessments

- An As-Needed phase where you graduate from care entirely or come in when you feel a flare up or new problem

The path looks different for every patient, and we reassess regularly to make sure you're moving forward — not just coming back.

Q: Can you help with headaches?

A: Often, yes. Many headaches — especially tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches — are driven by issues in the neck and upper back. Our approach is the same as with any other complaint: a Movement Assessment to figure out what's going on, then targeted treatment to address the root cause. If we evaluate you and the headache pattern doesn't fit our scope, we'll let you know and help refer you to the right provider.

Q: I had surgery — can you still help me with recovery?

A: Often, yes. Post-surgical patients — whether you're recovering from a shoulder repair, knee surgery, a meniscus repair, an ACL reconstruction, or a back procedure — are a regular part of our caseload. Timing matters: we typically wait until your wounds are closed, you are able to sit, stand and walk without difficulty and your surgeon has cleared you for active rehab. Once you're cleared, our movement-first approach complements the rehab work you've already done and helps you return to your sport, not just to "normal." Bring your surgical and PT records when you come in.

Logistics

Q: Do I need a referral to see a sports chiropractor or massage therapist in Spokane?

A: In most cases, a referral is not required to see one of our Spokane chiropractors. A referral is only required if you are receiving chiropractic care through the VA Hospital's Community Care Program.

For massage therapy, most insurance plans require a diagnosis. Our Spokane massage therapists must have a referral or note from a licensed provider outlining the condition being treated. If you don't already have one, one of our chiropractors can evaluate you and provide the necessary referral prior to your massage appointment.

Q: Do you accept insurance for sports chiropractic care and massage therapy?

A: Our chiropractors and massage therapists are contracted with most major medical insurance plans. We also accept third-party motor vehicle (auto accident) insurance and workers' compensation plans for both chiropractic care and massage therapy. A complete list of the insurance plans we work with is available on our website under Ways to Pay.

Q: Can I schedule sports chiropractic or massage services in Spokane without insurance?

A: Yes. You can receive chiropractic care and massage therapy in Spokane even if you do not have insurance or choose not to use it. We also offer a Recovery Care Program, which provides time-of-service discounts for both chiropractic and massage care. Our team will provide a cost estimate prior to your first visit.

Q: How far out are your sports chiropractic and massage providers booking?

A: Chiropractic appointments are typically available within 3–5 days, depending on your availability. Massage therapy appointments are usually booking 3–4 weeks out. You can check real-time availability and book online to secure the earliest opening.

Q: Do you accept walk-ins for sports chiropractic and massage appointments in Spokane?

A: We do not accept unscheduled walk-ins at our Spokane clinic. However, same-day chiropractic and massage appointments are sometimes available. The best way to secure a same-day appointment is to check online booking availability through our website or Google profile.

Q: Can I book a Saturday appointment with a sports chiropractor or massage therapist in Spokane?

A:  At this time, we do not have chiropractic or massage appointments available on Saturdays at our Spokane clinic. You can view our current availability and book your appointment online at any time through our website or Google profile.
